That means two things matter for anyone searching for an inmate: the person is either awaiting trial or serving a sentence of 364 days or less, and the right lookup tool is the MDCR Inmate Search, not the Florida Department of Corrections Offender Search or the federal BOP inmate locator. Metro West sits along the same NW 41st Street corridor as Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center, roughly 7 miles to the west of TGK. While TGK is the central intake and release point for Miami-Dade county custody, Metro West functions primarily as a large housing facility. People arrested in Miami-Dade are booked at TGK first, and many are then transferred or assigned to Metro West for housing while their cases move through the court system. A 2018 county commissary RFP listed MWDC's capacity as 2,862 beds with an average daily population of 2,124 as of December 31, 2018. Current capacity was not located on the current MDCR contact page at the time of this research. The most recent dated population figure comes from the MDCR Daily Jail Population PDF for May 28, 2026, which counted 2,430 people at MWDC that day, making it the largest individual housing count across all MDCR facilities in that report.

Metro West Detention Center Capacity and Population

Metro West holds the highest daily count among MDCR county jail facilities in current reporting. On May 28, 2026, the MDCR Daily Jail Population PDF listed 2,430 people at MWDC, compared to 1,143 at Pre-Trial Detention Center and 1,098 at Turner Guilford Knight that same day. Across all MDCR facilities, 4,788 people were in county custody on that date. Metro West housed slightly more than half of that total.

The 2,862-bed capacity figure comes from the 2018 commissary RFP and should be read with its date in mind. MDCR's current contact page did not list a revised rated capacity for Metro West as of this research pass. How to Look Up a Metro West Detention Center Inmate

The correct search tool for Metro West inmates is the MDCR Inmate Search at miamidade.gov. This free public form searches all people in Miami-Dade county jail custody, including those housed at Metro West, TGK, Pre-Trial Detention Center, and the Boot Camp Program. There is no separate Metro West roster. The search form shows two fields: Last Name and First Name. Each requires a minimum of three characters. No booking number, date-of-birth, or facility dropdown is visible on the public form.

The MDCR FAQ explains one important location code: if a result shows NDCCC in the location column, the person is not physically in county custody but is on house arrest monitored by an ankle bracelet. The North Dade Community Correctional Center is no longer open; the code now signals electronic monitoring rather than facility confinement. Results for people housed at Metro West will show MWDC or a related location code in the location field.

A person who does not appear in the search may be in one of several situations. A very recent arrest may still be processing through TGK. A person sentenced to a Florida state prison term will have moved from MDCR to FDC custody; use the FDC Offender Search for state inmates. Federal defendants may be in BOP or USMS custody. Immigration detainees at Krome are found through the ICE Online Detainee Locator System, not the MDCR portal.

2. Enter at least three characters in the Last Name field and at least three characters in the First Name field.
3. Click Search. Review the results for name, date of birth, race, sex, facility location, charges, bond amount, jail number, booking date and time, and mugshot.
4. If the location shows MWDC, the person is housed at Metro West. Confirm bond and charge details, then note the jail number for mail, deposits, and records requests.
5. If no result appears, call MDCR main at 786-263-7000 or Booking at 786-263-5312 before concluding the person is not in custody.

Phone-based lookup is an alternative when the online search returns no result or when real-time information is needed. The MDCR inmate search also includes released inmates for up to 72 hours after release, according to the department's FAQ. A result that appears but shows a released status means the person was released recently and may still show charges and bond information from the custody period.

MDCR headquarters at 786-263-7000 handles general department inquiries. For public records requests about corrections matters, MDCR uses GovQA, the county's public records management portal.

Public records requests for corrections records go through the GovQA portal at miamidadecounty.govqa.us. Anonymous submissions are allowed, but anonymous users must use a reference number to track status rather than receiving email updates. MDCR Central Records is located at 2525 NW 62nd St., Suite 4200, Miami, FL 33147. Fees for copies include $0.15 per single-sided page, $0.20 per double-sided page, and $1.00 per certified page. Arrest reports from law-enforcement agencies should be requested from the arresting agency, not from MDCR, since those are law-enforcement records rather than corrections records.

Metro West Detention Center Inmate Visitation Setup

MDCR uses remote video visitation as the standard service for all county jail facilities, including Metro West. Visits are conducted through the GTL platform at miamidade.gtlvisitme.com. Friends and family must be on the inmate's Approved Master Visitation List before they can schedule a visit. Adding someone to the list is the inmate's responsibility. After being confirmed as approved, the visitor creates an account with GTL and books a session. MDCR instructs visitors to allow up to 24 hours for processing. Attorneys and professional visitors follow a separate process. Attorneys submit the Attorney Application for Remote Video Visitation and register with GTL. Professional visitors complete the Professional Visitor Application and then register. Neither category uses the friends-and-family approval path. Both types of visits are conducted remotely through GTL.

Metro West Detention Center Inmate Mail, Phone, and Deposits

Personal mail for Metro West inmates does not go to the facility's street address. All personal correspondence routes through a centralized digital mail center operated by MDCR in Tampa. This applies to every MDCR county jail facility, including Metro West, TGK, and Pre-Trial Detention Center. Mail sent to 13850 NW 41st St will not reach the inmate. Only United States Postal Service mail is accepted; private couriers such as UPS or FedEx are not.

The letter must be written on plain white, originally lined paper. A long list of prohibited items includes hardcover and paperback books, magazines, newspapers, greeting cards, postcards, colored paper or envelopes, stamps, envelopes, paper, pens, pencils, stickers, padded or bubble mailers, and non-white lined correspondence. The return address on both the envelope and the letter itself must include the sender's full name, street address, city, state, and ZIP code. The correct mailing format for Metro West inmates is:

Trust account deposits for Metro West inmates go through TouchPay using MDCR facility number 233101. This number is required for any TouchPay transaction along with the inmate's name and jail number. Online deposits accept MasterCard and Visa credit and debit cards. Phone deposits go through TouchPay at 1-866-232-1899. Cash deposits must be made in person at a lobby kiosk; the Metro West lobby kiosk is one of three MDCR kiosk locations.

Metro West kiosk hours differ from TGK kiosk hours. Monday runs 8:30 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. Tuesday runs 4:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. only, a shorter window than other days. Wednesday through Sunday each run 8:30 a.m. to 9:00 p.m.

Commissary gifts ordered through iCare are separate from trust deposits. Booking, Intake, and Housing at Metro West

Metro West is a housing facility, not the primary intake point. All arrests in Miami-Dade County route through Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center for the initial booking process. At TGK, staff verify identity, take fingerprints and the booking photo, conduct medical and mental-health screening, inventory property, enter charges, assign a jail number, and classify the person for housing. Only after booking at TGK is a person transferred or assigned to Metro West or another MDCR facility based on classification and housing availability.

This means two things for people searching for a recently arrested person. First, a very new arrest will show at TGK in the MDCR search before any transfer to Metro West. Second, once housing is assigned, the MDCR search location field will update to reflect the current facility. A result showing MWDC means the person has been transferred to Metro West. The MDCR FAQ says booking can take several hours, so the roster may not reflect a new arrest immediately.

The booking steps at TGK that precede housing at Metro West are:

1. Arrest by Miami-Dade law enforcement, followed by transport to TGK.
2. Identity verification, fingerprints, and booking photo taken at TGK.
3. Medical and mental-health screening completed by MDCR medical staff.
4. Property inventoried and stored in the TGK Property Room.
5. Charges entered and jail number assigned; this number stays with the person throughout county custody.
6. Classification determines security level and housing unit; Metro West may receive the housing assignment depending on population, charges, and classification.
7. Bond information entered if the charge is bondable; a bond amount on the roster does not guarantee release if holds or detainers exist.

Sentences of more than 364 days, which are state prison terms, result in a transfer from MDCR to the Florida Department of Corrections. Once that transfer happens, the MDCR Inmate Search will no longer show the person as currently housed at Metro West or any other MDCR facility. Use the FDC Offender Search for sentenced state prisoners. Newly sentenced male prisoners from Miami-Dade often go through South Florida Reception Center in Doral for FDC classification before permanent assignment.

Pre-trial detention

Holding a person in custody before their case is resolved by the court; most Metro West inmates are in this category.

Classification

MDCR's process of evaluating charges, history, and health to assign a person to the appropriate housing unit and custody level.

Detainer

A hold from another agency, such as ICE or another jurisdiction, that can block release even when local bond is satisfied.

Metro West County Custody vs. State and Federal Holds

Metro West holds people in county custody only. That distinction matters enormously for anyone trying to find or contact an inmate. The MDCR Inmate Search covers county jail inmates, not state prisoners and not federal detainees. A person who is held on an immigration detainer may still appear on the MDCR roster if they are physically in county custody, but their immigration status is tracked through the ICE Online Detainee Locator System, not the MDCR search. The MDCR daily population PDF for May 28, 2026 reported 637 immigration holds and detainers across the whole MDCR system over the prior seven days, showing how frequently ICE holds layer on top of county charges.

The daily population report for MDCR also distinguishes charge status within the county system: 78.7% of people in county custody on May 28, 2026 were unsentenced, meaning pre-trial. A smaller share were partially or fully sentenced to county terms. Families sometimes confuse a "sentenced" notation on the roster with a state prison sentence; a person sentenced to a county term of 364 days or less remains in MDCR custody and stays searchable on the MDCR roster for the duration of that sentence.

Metro West Detention Center Inmate Programs and Conditions

Metro West is the largest housing facility in the current Miami-Dade county jail system by daily population count. MDCR describes itself as one of the largest correctional systems in the United States, responsible for people awaiting trial and people serving sentences of 364 days or less across its four county facilities. Metro West carries a large share of that population. The 2018 commissary RFP placed its capacity at 2,862 beds. MDCR reports zero tolerance for inmate sexual assault and abuse.
